Sometimes I wonder, why do I share the personal things, my personal stories?
To help someone get to know me? In that case, why not just share the insights I've come to based on the story, rather than the story itself?
To impress someone? Why not just let people base an opinion on what they see now instead of my history?
Somehow telling our stories is a big part of how we communicate... but why? Any thoughts from my adoring public?

My insight about you is that you are likely most interested in the feelings that you experience in changing contexts. The details of that experience are secondary to those feelings and only interesting as a way to highlight your feelings that are otherwise not specific enough to express directly.
i think storytelling is an art - you do it for the same reason someone paints a picture instead of writing a dissertation. more context, more emotion, more of yourself. when we create art, we are sharing both ourselves and the direct content, but i think that's ok.
It may vary between people, but I think helping someone get to know you is part of it. Language is imprecise, so the more contextual details you can give someone when explaining insights, the more likely they are to understand.
I think overall it's about relating to other people, and the closer they can come to experiencing your stories themselves, the closer they get to you.
I just have another question. Why do we want people to get to know us? I think we want to feel understood. We feel validated and less alone in the world if someone can "identify" with us.
